The Flash

DATE CREATED: ~4/2005
SOFTWARE: Adobe AfterEffects and PhotoShop

BACKGROUND:
I've been a fan of the comic book world since I was a kid, so when I took a university course in Adobe AfterEffects and was told that our final project would be of our own choosing, it was only natural that the idea to literally bring the comic pages of my favorite superhero to life came to mind. This short segment took me about a month to create, having to separate and animate countless layers and render them three-dimensional.

I got an A.

CRITIQUE:
Really the main thing I wanted to do differently was to have more of an animated, blurred trail following the Flash as he ran around, but found it difficult to do in 3D mode in AfterEffects. I've thought of a couple ways to do it and may go back to do some tweaking.

There is a small plot (or, rater, a motivation to the Flash's running around), but I'm not sure how clear that is made with the edits and panels I selected. If you can't tell what it is, the Flash is trying to run away from being erased. He jumps from a page that almost gets him and is chased by multiple erasing pages that want to capture him. In the end, he is caught.

One of the good decisions I made was in leaving his limbs alone. I originally envisioned this with the Flash's limbs animated somewhat. I messed with this a little but decided that it looked way too cheesy.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
-The music comes from "The Flash" T.V. series from the early '90s.
-Most of the comic pages come from "The Flash" series itself, though some are pages from "Superman," "Showcase," "Green Lantern," and several others.
